AI Builders Tackle Northern Ontario's Biggest Challenges at Cursor Hackathon Sudbury 2026

More than 180 participants spent the day prototyping AI solutions for sustainability, community health, and mining safety at Laurentian University.

SUDBURY, ON · June 27, 2026 · Cursor Hackathon Sudbury 2026, themed "Build the North," brought together more than 180 builders, students, and professionals at the Cliff Fielding Building, Laurentian University, for a one-day AI building competition focused on real opportunities and challenges across Northern Ontario.

Working in teams, participants used AI tools including Cursor to design and ship working prototypes in a single day. Throughout the event, builders received tool credits, refreshments, networking, and hands-on support from mentors, before presenting their projects to a panel of judges.

Judging Panel

Projects were evaluated by a panel of regional founders, engineers, and data scientists: Dr. Charles Ramcharan (Founder, Tunik); Brent Ritchie (Senior Systems Analyst & Developer, Glencore; Founder, Lighthouse Analytics; Professor, Cambrian College); Rakshitha M. Rodrigo (Software Engineer, Becker Mining Systems Canada); and Adrián Hermoza-Bayona (Data Scientist, Canadian Shield Health Care Services). Mentorship was provided by Cambrian College professors Nathan Abourbih and Dr. Reza Dibaj.
